Method Statement for Screed Pouring on Slab | Work Procedure
Scope of Work:
This method statement describes the activities and process of screed pouring work for School Project works including preparation, installation and protection as per the project requirement.
The purpose of this method statement is to conduct a systematic work execution for the screed pouring work for that will produce and deliver a safe execution procedure in accordance with the approved project specification and Lifting procedure.
It is the policy of the Company to provide a safe and healthy place of employment. In areas where scaffolding is to be erected, dismantled, altered, moved or accessed for any purpose, the following procedure shall be utilized.
Activities:
Screed pouring works will comprise the following activities
- Preparation for screed pouring
- Screed pouring
Purpose:
The purpose of this document is to ensure that the standards and specification of the School Campus Project and that of "Company Name" is effectively implemented during the process of screed pouring works. This method statement provides the necessary support to the screed pouring team with relevant information regarding the specific project requirement and a guideline for a procedure to work safely.
Communication:
The contents of this method statement shall be explained and demonstrated to all involved personnel based on specific task allocation. Site Engineer / Supervisor, subcontractors’ signatures shall be taken on the approved method statement as a matter of record. Daily (at the start of each shift) the Works Supervisor and HSEO will complete a Pre-works briefing with ALL labor based on the activities to be complete in the shift (pre-works briefing will be signed by ALL labor to demonstrate that they have understood the activities and associated controls. They will then complete a site walk to ensure and verify that all the controls are in place. Both the RAM and Pre-works briefing will be located on site with the Works Supervisor for reference and review.
Construction Methodology:
1. Storage and Handling
- The Portland cement, sand, aggregate reinforcement shall be ordered from the approved sources / supplier with all necessary documentation as required.
- Once offloaded the materials shall be checked against the documentation to ensure compliance. Once the delivery order and other relevant documents have been stamped with acceptance by the CONTRACTOR QCE/Store keeper, the material shall be stocked in the storage yards/ lay down area.
- Store materials inside under cover keep them dry & protected against damage from weather, condensation.
- MIR shall be submitted along with relevant documents prior to proceeding.
2. Materials:
Following materials shall be used for screed constructions.
- Cement shall be ordinary Portland cement.
- Sand shall be clean and free from adherent coatings and other contamination.
- Coarse aggregate 10mm as per project specification.
- Water to be used shall be clean fresh, suitable for domestic water consumption and free from chemicals or additives which could affect the mix.
- Approved bonding agent shall be used.
- Sampling shall be taken as per project specification and approved third party laboratory.
3. Preparation for screed.
- Surface slab should be clean from any loose or unwanted material such as mortar, wood, paint, curing compound, oil and grease.
- Ensure that all the survey related works carried out as pre latest approved drawing.
- It’s recommended to do concrete hacking using Chisel or Hammering drill if the surface is found smooth and after hacking is done the dust remains and loose material should be cleaned using brush and pressure water jet to completely remove the traces of remains.
- Ensure water proofing works shall be completed as per the approved latest drawing and project specification and approved manufacture product data sheet.
- Coordinate and consult with other discipline (mechanical/electrical/piping etc.) ensure that all discipline activities have been completed and inspected prior to proceed screed.
- Reinforcement may be required as per latest approved drawing.
4. Mixing
- Grade C16/20 screed shall be used and following are the properties of material with two option available:
- The mix design shall be subjected to crush test by 3rd party to verify the compressive strength
- READY-MIX SCREED (Ready mix plant and mix design shall be approved prior to proceed screed)
- MIX AT SITE SCREED (Site mix shall be follow as below mix ratio) Compressive Strength = 20 MPa
- Coarse Aggregate Size 3/8 inch = 10mm
- W/C (water to cement) ratio = 0.56
- Mixing proportions = 1:2:4 (Cement/Sand/Aggregate)
5. Screed Pouring
- Following mix shall be followed for screed pouring.
- Ready-mix (as per approved plant and mix design).
- Site mix (above site mix ratio).
- Mock-up shall be made to obtain consultant and clients approval at the actual scope of work and first inspection will be considered as mockup.
- Ensure that the MEP clearance shall be obtained before screed pouring.
- FOR READY-MIX SCREED, shall be received at site from approved ready-mix plant as per approved mix design.
- FOR MIXING AT SITE SCREED, ensure that all measuring equipment and mechanical mixer available to control the mixing ratio and a supervisor shall be supervising the mixing process as per approved mixing ratio.
- Wheel barrows will be used to transport concrete screed from the portable mixer to the casting location. In case of huge or open area i.e., lobbies, retail area, parking lots screed shall be poured directly from the mixer using its lever and tilting ability.
- Poured screed shall than be spread and pushed towards corners using hand fork shovels and pavers.
- After fill up and spread up the poured screed shall be tapped using flat trowel and aluminum straight edge to make sure the level is correct.
- In case of large and open areas Compact power trowel (helicopter Trowel) shall be used to tackle time measures.
- Bonding agent shall be applied on direct concrete surface to achieve extra bonding between slab and screed and to prevent any hollow sounds or cracks.
- Bonding agent shall be followed according to the approved material's technical data sheet.
6. Screed Thickness
- Nominal: 50mm (+/- 15mm allowance for slab deflection).
- Minimum: 65 mm.
- Maximum: 75mm.
7. Curing
- Protect surface from wind, draughts and strong sunlight Immediately after laying.
- Finished screed shall be covered cover with burlap and polythene sheet for curing at least 7 days.
8. Cleaning and Handover
- When all the activities are completed, the area will be cleaned thoroughly. Once the cleaning is done and approved, a "Request for Inspection" will be raised for acceptance.
9. House Keeping
- Safety Engineer shall ensure to maintain safety for all aspects.
- Safety assistant are allocated all the site locations to maintain housekeeping.
- All demolished/removed material to be disposed in one allocated area for pick-up/removal from site.
10. Tools & Equipment for Works:
- Portable Concrete Mixer
- Wheel Barrow
- Hand Tools
- Trowel
- Aluminum Straight Edge
- Fork Shovel
- Vibrator
- Air Compressor
- Concrete pump
- Survey Tools
- Measuring tools (for Cement, Sand, Aggregate and water)
Note: Above listed equipment shall be assigned as per requirements of each work during the mobilization stage
11. Storage and Handling
The safe storage of hazardous chemicals is an essential part of an environmental, health, and safety program. Chemical storage facilities must meet certain minimum standards to satisfy diverse regulations, store must observe several requirements that incorporate safe storage:
- Keeping an up-to-date chemical inventory
- Proper chemical labeling
- segregating incompatible chemical
- Providing separate storage
- Sheltered storage to avoid direct sunlight
- Area should be free of any ignition sources
- Provide suitable Fire Extinguisher
- Should provide appropriate warning signs.
- No smoking or naked flames near the fuel.
- Do not inhale vapor.
- Read material safety data sheet for the fuel.
- Do not attempt to lift container manually.
- Have an appropriate funnel available.
- Check for leaks.
